Say it Loud: Bourgeois and Proud. The Voice of the Bordeaux Middle Classes

POSTED ON 27/09/2010

What is a cru bourgeois and why should we care? Basically, the Bordeaux hierarchy has its own classification for those châteaux on the Left Bank of Bordeaux excluded from the famous 1855 classification of Bordeaux. The 1855 classification was never meant to be set in stone, but since this super league of five divisions was drawn up for the Exposition Universelle in Paris under the auspices of Emperor Napoleon III, it has by and large proved to be so accurate as to be worth retaining. Or at least that’s what the five tiers of châteaux led by the first growths (Lafite, Latour, Margaux, Mouton-Rothschild and Haut-Brion) would have us believe.

L'AllianceL'Alliance

Beneath the 1855 classification sit the crus bourgeois, nearly 300 châteaux that would be left out in the cold if they didn’t have their own set up. Hence the classification of cru bourgeois, middle-ranking châteaux, that is, considered superior to the many petits châteaux, also known as artisans and paysans, of Bordeaux. Now, after much in-fighting and wrangling, it seems as if the good burgers of Bordeaux have finally seen sense and come up with a new classification that seeks to provide an independent assessment of quality levels. The point is that the listing is an annual quality assessment, not an ossification like the 1855 classification.

There’s quite some history to the crus bourgeois. As they tell us ‘In the early thirteenth century, France was under the rule of King John of England, known by the nickname of John Lackland (Jean sans Terre). In 1203, the English king exempted the merchants of Bordeaux from the main export tax or "Grande Coutume". In return, the "bourgeois" of the principal regions in the south-west pledged to support him against the King of France, Philippe Auguste. This measure gave the merchants of Gascony a monopoly on the English market, and enabled the birth of the crus Bourgeois du Médoc’.

Bourgeois, moi? Well, yes actuallyBourgeois, moi? Well, yes actually

Since the unofficial classification of 444 châteaux as crus bourgeois in 1932, there have been rumbles of dissatisfaction with the system. This came to a head after a ministerial decree of June 17 2003 ratified the first Official Classification of the Crus Bourgeois with 247 châteaux out of 490 candidates accepted. A number of excluded châteaux objected, and the decree was annulled in 2007 on the grounds that the ratifying procedures had been unfair. All of which brings us to the new classification.

Following the formation of the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc, the term cru bourgeois was reborn with "Cru Bourgeois" Reconnaissance, officially approved on 16 November 2009. Out of 290 candidate châteaux, 243 châteaux were recognised for the 2008 vintage, 96 crus bourgeois in Médoc (40%), 81 in Haut-Médoc (33%), 12 in Listrac (5%) and Moulis (5%), 13 in Margaux, (5%), 2 in Saint-Julien (1%), 5 in Pauillac (2%) and 22 in Saint-Estèphe (9%). Covering roughly 3,500 hectares, or 22 % of the Médoc's vineyards, they produce between them over 25 million bottles for the 2008 vintage, or 30% of the Médoc's production.

The idea behind “Cru Bourgeois” Reconnaissance is to provide an annual examination, open to all properties in the Médoc, in which the wines are judged two years after the harvest. This involves the verification through an audit of the facilities of each property applying, and of the quality of its wine by an annual blind tasting by an expert panel of professional tasters recognized by the industry and approved every year by an independent organization, selected by the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc. The quality benchmarks will be adjusted each year according to the quality of each vintage.

Bourgeois and proudBourgeois and proud

So far so good. So is all now peace and harmony among the bourgeois? Er, yes and no. Not all the châteaux known as crus bourgeois have declared themselves in favour of the classification. Well-known names such as d’Angludet, Chasse-Spleen, Potensac and Poujeaux that never made the 1855 classification of Bordeaux thus find themselves in a cleft stick, at least from a classification point of view. They would probably argue however that it’s no skin off their noses. As long as their brands are known worldwide, which they are, and they can sell their wares, why should they worry. Indeed why should they be dragged down by a system that could be seen to be faintly pejorative, and that doesn’t do them justice?

One of the problems with crus bourgeois is that they have a couple of major hurdles to jump. The major obstacle is that their classification puts them as official second class citizens to the better-known crus classés. To that extent, they are saying ‘I know my place, I’m a bourgeois, you’re an aristocrat and never the twain shall shake hands on equal terms’. They might say that that’s simply a reflection of the reality that they are indeed handmaidens to the greatest wines of Bordeaux. Their other misfortune is that bourgeois is a more derogatory term in the English language than it is the French. To be bourgeois in English is to be parochial, limited and small-minded. To be bourgeois in French has no such stigma.

The Médoc - where the bourgeois liveThe Médoc - where the bourgeois live

Yet, like servants in the households and restaurants of Asia, the crus bourgeois of the new classification seem to be made up of people stoically prepared to accept their lot in life. Not as inferior, mind you, but as realistically reflecting who and what they are. And being realistic, they can go to the market and say ‘yes indeed, we are not the fat cats, we are not the grand châteaux now being snapped up by Asian investors and therefore taking ourselves outside the realms of the ambitions and budget of the person in the street who enjoys good wine at a reasonable price, no. We are bourgeois, affordable and proud of it’. Therein lies the perfect logic and realism of the cru bourgeois. And given the way that the prices of the 2009s have gone, therein lies both the salvation of Bordeaux that’s not fancy and us as wine drinkers.

The tasting

On 23 September, in London, the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc put on a tasting of the 2008s. I tasted a handful and here are my conclusions:

Château DEYREM VALENTIN

Youthful colour, stylish nose, with nice spicy touch of cedary oak, attractive fresh clean mulberry juicy red fruits quality with quite firm, youthfully vigorous tannins, and a light complexing touch of oak, overall well-crafted and accessible modern claret. 90

Château CLÉMENT-PICHON

Deep colour, quite a big splash of modern, 'sexy' coffee bean and toasty oak on the nose, nice richly developed black fruits quality on the palate, still encased in a straitjacket of smoky oak, but a backbone of good firm muscular tannins and fresh acidity augurs well for the future. Smart wine. 90

Château PAVEIL DE LUZE

Good colour, fresh and juicy aromas with a touch of spicy oak lurking in there adding invitation, attractive red fruit quality with lovely seductive fruit freshness and bite, the oak present but playing a bit part, allowing the fruit vibrancy and seemless purity to come to the surface. 90

Château LE CROCK

Good deep colour, nice nose, authentic, equally this has good depth of black cherry fruit on the palate, lovely sweet rich middle, a deft touch of spicy vanillin oak, nice freshness and succulent tannins, in fact very good overall balance and drinkability. 89

Château LA TOUR DE MONS

Deep colour, attractive nose, quite modern in style with rich coffee bean oak aromas, powerful sweet dark cherry fruit and firm, muscular tannins, but saving grace of good fresh incisive acidity and nice overall balance; still young but should mature into a good classic claret of its type. 89

Château CHARMAIL

Good colour, stylish nose of polished cedary oak and fresh red fruits, quite firm and muscular fruit on the palate with serious tannins and fresh acidity, but well-made, nicely integrated oak and good mulberry and dark cherry fruit that should come into its stride nicely in a year or so. 89

Château LES ORMES SORBET

Attractive nose, mid-ruby colour, nice delicate touch of oak, well-made, cherryish fruit with good veneer of oak, modern style, nice fresh, juicy mulberryish acidity and supple textured fruit quality. Very attractive, approachable now and will keep 5 years easily. 89

Château PALOUMEY

deep ruby hue, good bright fruit quality, quite muscular and firm at this stage, but nice refreshing blackcurranty fruit character, juicy drinkability with well-proportioned, lightly toasty oak; really well-crafted fruit quality. A really good drink. 89

Château FONREAUD

Bright colour, attractively fresh vivid aromas and fruit, well-made, classic style with a fresh cherry and blackcurrant fruit quality, juicy accessible tannins, a well-crafted veneer of spicy oak, and the very attractive drinkability of a classic young claret. 89

Château CAMBON LA PELOUSE

Good depth of colour, nice fresh mulberryish nose, firm chocolatey fruit on the palate with nice touch of spicy oak, good mulberry fruit and quite firm, dry tannins at the moment, still youthful and muscular, needing a good year for the tannins to soften, but nice quality of fruit and good freshness and bite. 88

Château LA FLEUR PEYRABON

Deep colour, lots of vanilla and smoky oak on the nose, quite 'modern and 'sexy' in style, and the fruit which is dark berry in character, is rather smothered at the moment by oak, but it's good, and concentrated, so may come through in time, but just how long that will be remains to be seen. Doubt that it will be a drinkable proposition for the next couple of years. 88

Château TAYAC

Deep colour, good fresh dark fruits, a tad oaky, nice red fruits on the palate, a touch extracted and dry initially, but still youthful and vigorous, needing time to be put through its paces in bottle as the oak softens and rounds it out. 88

Château ROLLAN DE BY

Deep colour, sweet cassis nose, quite a lot of oak, powerful, dense cassis fruit with lots of smoky chocolatey oak in the modern vein, a tad overoaked for my liking but no doubting the quality of the fruit and good supple tannins and balancing acidity too. 88

Château TOUR DES TERMES

Good colour, nice nose, good fruit freshness and succulence of tannins, no overpowering oak, just nicely proportioned and good overall balance to the bright red fruits quality. 87

Château BEAUMONT

Pleasant nose and fruit, well-made, sturdy, classic Médoc, with attractively fresh blackcurrant fruit and nice lightly spicy veneer of oak, finishing with quite firm, rustic tannins. 87

Château PREUILLAC

Good colour, sweet ripe nose, lots of sweetly ripe, opulently fleshy fruit here, well-made, nicely applied tannins and juicy acidity, overall well-balanced and approachable. 87

Château SAINT-CHRISTOLY

Nice nose, juicy attractive cherry fruit, light touch of oak, succulent tannins, well-made juicy, approachable claret, no frills, but by the same token, a very drinkable proposition with the structure and backbone for ageing for 3 – 5 years . 87

Château LAROSE TRINTAUDON

Good colour, pleasant fresh nose, well put together, classic style with quite attractive red fruits, firmish, dry tannins and good fresh acidity in the leaner 'classic' style; but nicely juicy, supple and refreshing claret that ‘s almost approachable now. 87

Château PEYRAT FOURTHON

Deep colour, oaky and sweet, modern style, quite chunky tannins; almost OTT oak and tannin, but not quite, lots of blackberry fruit and 'sexy' oak, reflecting the modern night-clubby label. 87

Château PONTOISE CABARRUS

Nice nose, touch of spicy oak, well-made wine, good intense black cherry fruit, spicy, nice fruit richness, quite muscular youthful tannins and firm acidity, a big backbone, but good fruit quality overall. 87

Château TOUR DE PEZ

Nice nose and fresh fruit quality, well-made, fresh red fruits, well-balanced nice touch of spicy oak, slight rustic dry tannins on the finish. 87

Château TOUR HAUT CAUSSAN

Deep colour, quite extracted and rather rustic, good classic Médoc fruit character, if a tad four-square and firm, but may resolve nicely with a year in bottle, and with food. 86

Château GREYSAC

Mid ruby, clean, fresh, quite traditional style, no evident oak, well-crafted, classic style, a tad steely and austere, slightly lean, dry finish. 86

Château DE GIRONVILLE

Deep colour, ripe smelling, quite sweet rich and concentrated dark berry jam fruit quality, very ripe, rather firm extraction, good fruit quality nonetheless, if a tad extracted and dry on the finish. 86

Château CARONNE SAINTE GEMME

Slightly dusty nose, rather plummy fruit, quite heftily extracted tannins, a wine that needs quite a few years yet to come round, by which time the question will be whether the fruit has lasted. 85

Château LES GRANDS CHENES

Deep colour, quite oaky nose, very extracted and dry on the mid-palate, as a result of which the fruit here is a tad hollow, the palate rather shirt and drying. It may come round but needs a year or more for us to find out. 84

Château LOUDENNE

Good colour, a tad four square and chunky, decent but rather charmless and dry. Could do better. 84

Château POITEVIN

Bit rhubarby and short. Decent. 83

Château REVERDI

Fair, a tad extracted and hollow. 83

Château DUTRUCH GRAND POUJEAUX

Nose? Fruit rather sweet. And chunky. 83

Château MONGRAVEY

Light red fruits, a tad confected. 83

Château RAMAGE LA BATISSE

Not sure about this one, seems quite green peppery on the nose and quite extracted and dry on the palate, rather four-square, oaky and tannic. 83

Château LA TOUR DE BESSAN

Mid-ruby colour, fair nose, rather extracted and chunky tannins that fur up the mouth and a bitter chunky finish that makes you wonder if the fruit will ever come round. Bretty ? 82
